Cytometry opened a new era in studies of cell cycle and cell proliferation. Rapid and accurate measurement of cell constituents combined with analysis of chromatin structure as well as with capability to detect incorporation of DNA precursors such as BrdU offered by cytometry dramatically expanded our knowledge about mechanisms regulating cell proliferation. When applied to clinical material cytometry opened new avenues to explore defective proliferation associated with cancer and other proliferative diseases. The history of development and application of cytometric techniques in analysis of cell proliferation and cell cycle, from its cradle until the present time, is presented in the review “Cytometry of the Cell Cycle: Cycling Through History” – Zbigniew Darzynkiewicz, June 2007
