American Society for Clinical Pathology Global Outreach
“Making a World of Difference”
In August 2005, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention engaged ASCP under a cooperative agreement to support laboratory training and quality improvement for diagnosis and laboratory monitoring of HIV/AIDS patients in resource-limited countries that are part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
ASCP specializes in laboratory training and technical assistance in basic laboratory operation, CD4, clinical chemistry, hematology, laboratory management, and phlebotomy, which support the improvement of diagnosis and laboratory monitoring of HIV/AIDS patients. ASCP’s training programs can be combined with a “training of trainers” workshop to empower participants to coordinate and facilitate trainings throughout the regions and districts of their countries. ASCP also provides pre-service curriculum development and implementation to enhance medical laboratory programs at the certificate and diploma levels. ASCP is also available to work in the areas of malaria and tuberculosis.
Since beginning work in Malawi in 2005, ASCP has collaborated with fourteen countries—Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Haiti, Guyana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, and Zambia. In three years, over 1500 laboratory professionals have been directly impacted by more than 50 ASCP training events. Technical assistance has impacted the areas of strategic planning, accreditation, quality systems, and management. In January 2008, ASCP was charged with the creation of the lab standardization document that was presented at the WHO/CDC consensus meeting in Maputo, Mozambique. Following that meeting, ASCP and CDC revised and incorporated participants’ suggestions to create an international guideline for laboratory standards. ASCP continues to be a world leader in training, technical assistance and curriculum development.
About ASCP
Since its founding in 1922, ASCP has been the leader in pathology and laboratory medicine in the United States. The society’s influence has guided the evolution and maturation of this medical specialty. ASCP is unique among pathology organizations in that its inclusive membership unites pathologists and laboratory professionals to advance the profession.
Over the years, ASCP’s education programs and the ASCP Board of Registry certification programs have provided the foundation for excellence in the profession. In addition, the society’s foresight and influence in creating the American Board of Pathology, the College of American Pathologists, and the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences established the structure to ensure the long-term strength and viability of pathology and laboratory medicine.
ASCP’s membership comprises 130,000 pathologists, doctoral-level laboratory scientists, and a host of laboratory professionals, including pathologists’ assistants, medical technologists, cytotechnologists, histotechnologists, histologic technicians, phlebotomists, medical laboratory technicians, and numerous laboratory specialists.
Long recognized for its excellence in providing continuing education for pathologists and laboratory professionals, ASCP sponsors hundreds of workshops, symposia, teleconferences, e-courses, and self-study programs annually. In addition, ASCP is a full-scale medical publisher of medical textbooks, reference manuals, slide atlases, audiovisual materials, and computer software, as well as Critical Values, a quarterly newsmagazine, and two prestigious journals, the American Journal of Clinical Pathology and LABMEDICINE.

“In my capacity as head of the Clinical Laboratories and Blood Transfusion in the Kingdom of Swaziland, I have had a wonderful opportunity to work with members of the ASCP staff and consultants for the past two years. The ASCP team is continuing to conduct trainings in Swaziland and has blended very well into the Swaziland culture. ASCP’s trainings have been well received; and what has been learned has been implemented/or is in the process of being implemented. Through ASCP’s efforts, the United States is an important ally in the fight against AIDS in Swaziland.” –Hosea Sukati, PHD, Director of Laboratory Services, Swaziland Ministry of Health
