An alternative to AMCA as a UV-excitable is Cascade Blue, obtainable
from Molecular Probes in the form Neutralite Avidin Cascade Blue, and
claimed by them to be brighter than AMCA. In our hands, the
signal-to-background was decades lower than for an equivalent FITC
conjugate, but it may be good enough for a dense surface receptor.
Cascade blue would really like to be excited near 400nm rather than
the Argon 350-360nm we used.
