The ability to define those Fas expressing cells already triggered
by Fas ligand is potentially very important in the context of HIV infection
as well as certain autoimmune disorders. Although other regulatory
molecules are definitely involved [bcl-2 family, etc], the Fas/Fas L
interaction may be a requisite step for peripheral T cell deletion. For
example, PBMC from HIV infected and uninfected individual s both express
Fas, but only the cells from infected people undergo rapid in vitro
apoptosis-presumably triggered in vivo. So an application might be to
quantitate the % of cells with Fas R already occupied.
