485 nm). There are a lot of rhodamine dyes, and they usually are identified
with supplementary letters (e.g., rhodamine B, absorption about 550 nm) or
numbers (e.g., rhodamine 101, the chromophore of Texas red, absorption about
590 nm) or with the relevant chemical substituents added to the name (e.g.,
tetramethylrhodamine, usually conjugated as TRITC, absorption about 550 nm).
None of the three rhodamine dyes just named excite enough at 488 to be
useful; rhodamine 123 is about the only commonly used rhodamine dye with an
absorption wavelength in that neighborhood.
