The Paranaric acids are the closest structural analogs of intrinsic membrane lipids among current fluorescent probes. Cis-paranaric acid, a naturally fluorescent fatty acid, loses its fluorescence over time when the four conjugated double bonds of the backbone chain become the target of lipid peroxidation reactions.
